PTA Council MissionThe Mission of the PTA Council is to serve as the voice for and to promote the welfare of every child in our school system and community. The Council will work with the PTA units, families, teachers, administration and our community to promote and realize the ideals of PTA. What is Fairfield PTA?When it comes to helping parents meet the challenges of raising and educating their kids in today’s complex world no organization provides more support and assistance than the Parent Teacher Association. The mission of the PTA is truly multi-faceted. First and foremost it is to support the interests of children by speaking on their behalf before any organization that makes decisions affecting them. Our representatives attend Board of Education and other town meetings acting as our eyes, ears, and mouth. Then they report back to the membership on the issues affecting our kids. Our mission continues by assisting parents in developing the skills needed to raise and protect their children by presenting programs dealing with a multitude of parenting issues. These programs have included seminars on the stresses placed on children being raised in an affluent community, parental liability stemming from alcohol use at teen parties, internet safety, building children’s self-esteem and the importance of family time, etc. The final and perhaps most critical part of our mission is to encourage parent and public involvement in our education system. It is widely established that when parents are actively involved in their children’s education a crucial partnership is formed between parent, child & school. The children and the schools end up doing better. Recognizing this need to engage parents in the education process we have established volunteer opportunities within the school system. These enable parents to directly interact with teachers and administrators while providing the children with enrichment experiences that supplement their curriculum. What is Fairfield PTA Council?Assisting the local PTA units to better serve their members is the Fairfield PTA Council. It acts as a coordinating body helping them to support one another when dealing with town wide issues and to operate in a unified manner. Each unit sends representatives to monthly Council meetings where information from the school administration, Board of Ed, and other town bodies is discussed and reported back to the parent community. Additionally, the Council runs the Fairfield Arts for Youth program (FAY) which brings professional cultural enrichment shows to the elementary schools, awards college scholarships to High School seniors who will be pursuing careers in education, funds parent education programs, and is currently investigating the feasibility of establishing a teen center in Fairfield, just to name a few. The PTA's of Fairfield take great pride in the work we do in pursuing our mission. Through countless volunteer hours the members of each local unit strive to help make our children's journey to adulthood safe, fun and filled with great opportunities for growth. We have committees that deal with child health and safety issues and those that foster the expression of the arts. There are others that encourage literacy by setting up reading incentive programs and book fairs. We have members who add our voice to the district’s on-going curriculum revisions and those who help us understand the school budget. Our volunteers also organize enrichment and social programs to supplement the school curriculum facilitating the learning of art appreciation, computer technology, critical thinking, environmental awareness and much, much more. For nearly 98 years the PTAs in Fairfield have been advocates for the interests of children working for their welfare in the areas of health, education and safety. Currently there are 17 PTA units in Fairfield, including a Special Education PTA (SEPTA). Our 2008-09 combined enrollment was over 9,000 memberships. Our strength has and always will come from the dedicated people of this town who are our members. It is their willingness to put the needs of all our children ahead of their own that is reflected in the success of the Fairfield public school system.
